About Bankruptcy and how it compares to Debt Relief and Credit Counseling
Bankruptcy cases are filed in a specific federal court district and require an attorney licensed in that state — so unlike debt settlement or credit counseling, there isn't a small set of national companies that dominate this market. Most bankruptcy help is genuinely local. This Directory lists the real national operators we've been able to verify, and below that, the tools to find and check out a local attorney with the same level of scrutiny we apply everywhere else on this site.
Before You Can File: Two Required Courses, Only From Government-Approved Providers
By federal law, anyone filing bankruptcy must complete a credit counseling course from a U.S. Trustee-approved agency in the 180 days before filing — and a separate debtor education course from an approved provider after filing, before their debt can be discharged. Skipping either one, or using an unapproved provider, can get a case dismissed or block the discharge entirely.
These aren't optional add-ons some companies upsell — they're a legal requirement, and only providers on the government's own approved list count.
Note: Alabama and North Carolina aren't under U.S. Trustee Program jurisdiction — bankruptcy cases there are handled by court-appointed Bankruptcy Administrators, who maintain their own separate approved-provider lists.
